Is This Dog Jumping For Joy, or Is There Another Purpose?

This dog’s joyful jumps have a useful purpose

How happy must this dog be, to be jumping so high and so often, right?

Well, this dog does look pretty happy, but its behavior actually has a real use — this pounce behavior, sometimes also called an observation jump, is used by many different kinds of animals, not just dogs, to see over tall things. It’s also a predation style that certain animals, like dogs, use when pursuing prey.

You can see that when the dog is standing normally on all fours, the grass is over its head and it cannot see. It is jumping so it can see where it is going! (And also because it is happy. You don’t always need a reason to jump.)

Have you ever seen your dog do this? If you have, we’d love to read all about it in the comments!
